I’m getting smarter or at my age it’s better known as getting wiser, especially with my shopping. This last year I’ve been trying to really purge my closets and only keep and purchase items that:
- Make me truly happy
- Can be mixed and matched or versatile
Here’s a perfect example . . .
When I spotted this cream dress I knew right away it could be worn many different ways.
Worn alone with some fun and comfortable flats . . .
Layered with a cardigan to give it a more casual look . . .
Layered with a leather/fur vest, boots and hat . . .
Or dressed up with heels and a layered with a lace vest.
When summer hits, I’ll be throwing this baby on with some gold, or silver or tan sandals both flats and heels. Now that’s a good investment, wouldn’t you say?
Here’s my five tips on thinking versatile:
- Buy a neutral color item such as cream, white, grey, or black.
- Make sure it looks good with both flats and heels or at least two different types of shoes.
- Use layers to give it a different look, like cardigans, vests and scarves.
- Shop you closets and drawers for inspiration.
- Be creative and yourself.
As always my friends, thanks for dropping by, have a wonderful Monday.
I’m linking up with Patti for visible Monday, Cherie for shoe and tell and Jess for THT

Wonderful dress, and it has that feminine vibe you wear so beautifully, Trina. I love mixing what I’ve got to make more looks, without over-shopping like I used to. Thanks for linking, xox

Doesn’t it feel so good to shop in our own closets? We need to have another blogger get together so I can donate to a fun cause.

Whoa! I’m getting a fantastic Great Gatsy vibe from this! You must feel PRETTY in this, and I don’t mean that in a twee sense. Those floaty layers are so feminine and soft. That last iteration I think is my fave but the long cardi reminds me of home games at Harvard (as if I’d know, heh). What a fun piece.
Trina says
Oh, you just made my day! Anything Great Gatsby feel is a good feel, don’t you just love that era? And I’m sure you would fit right in at the Home games at Harvard, haha.

Indeed a very versatile dress. Love it with the black and white cardigan and those ever so cute b&w shoes. And I really don’t like flat shoes with a dress. So that says a lot.
Your point of making sure a dress you buy goes with flats and heels is a difficult one for me as I don’t like flats with dresses or skirts (I know I am abnormal; besides I just said that…a sure sign I am getting older. I am repeating myself haha.).
But I adore the last picture with the lace cardigan. So nice. I could do with this outfit for a Charleston party too. Although I would never dare wearing it. Too scared I might damage it. It is really pretty.

Oh, a Charleston Party! We need to have one, that would be so much fun. Now you have sparked an idea and it will just sit in my brain until I do something about it. As for being afraid of getting it dirty, well I just throw this little number in the wash on delicate or hand wash cycle, hang to dry and its good to wear again.
As for flats with dresses, it must be my age but I find myself gravitating to them more and more.

The layers on this dress make it special.
I find it hard to shop for neutrals as I’m not attracted to them. Thus why 90% of my closet is filled with statement pieces.

But you statement pieces are all so wonderful! I’m only a tiny bit (ok, a whole lot) jealous of your closet. Stick with being Suzanne, we all love it way too much for you to go to the neutral side of things.

I love that suede vest!

Great dress! I love how much fun you are having with it! All the looks are different but very “you!”
One of my goals for 2016 is to only buy what I love and “need” (in terms of updating my wardrobe with a few pieces that go with what I already own). I think it can be tempting to just buy a lot of new things, but I have found that the best outfits often happen when you take a second (or third and fourth) look at what you own and start remixing things…
