Yes, it’s another summer reading list.
And yet if you’re anything like myself you always appreciate when someone takes the time to add their list of what books they’re reading and why they chose them.
Or in other words, their own little book reviews.
Here’s my top six I have chosen for this summer:
Vinegar Girl- by Anne Tyler
If you’re an Anne Tyler fan you’re most likely already reading this, but if your a new fan I highly suggest you give this one a go. It’s a contemporary, and fun take on Shakespeare’s play, “The Taming of the Shrew”. I found it to be a delightful, easy to read, and perfect for a summer (take to the beach kind of book). I’ll give it
The Miraculous Adventure of Edward Tulane-by Kate DiCamillo
First off, how on earth have I not read this little treasure before now? I’m blaming this on the fact that its actually a child’s chapter book and I’m no longer in the teaching profession. But good lesson learned, always remember to continue to review children’s chapter books. This little book is a true treasure. It’s a book full of life lessons, told in a heartwarming tale and evoking a swell of emotions along the way. I would say it’s a timeless classic for all ages.
The Collected Stories-by Grace Paley
I was introduced to Grace Paley as a young college student by one of my literature professors and have loved her ever since. She’s a comic, political, and women’s rights kind of writer all in one. When I discovered they had reassured her classic collection I couldn’t resist ordering this book. It’s actually three volumes of her short story collections all in one book. If you ever want to try your hand at short stories, this is the number ONE book you should get.
The Midwife’s Revolt-by Jodi Daynard
My mother recommended this book to me at the beginning of summer because she know’s I love historical fiction. The main character Lizzie Boylston is a midwife during the Revolutionary War and also a best friend to Abigail Adams. Although it is fiction, Daynard does an excellent job of giving you, as a reader, a first hand account of actual events during that time period as well as how women survived during this time period when left on their own. I found myself constantly googling information about that time period over and over again. I enjoyed this book so much that as soon as I finished I ran and bought the sequel . . .
Our Own Country-by Jodi Daynard
I just started this jewel so I can’t give an opinion yet, but it’s certainly not letting me done yet.
And I Darken-by Keirsten White
Every summer I try to find a Young Adult novel to dig my hands into. I read a review last week on this novel and then went to listen to the author discuss it. Obviously I walked out of the store with it in my hands. This is not my typical kind of read, it’s not my typical genre I enjoy or time period and yet I simply can’t wait to get reading it! So stay tuned, I’ll fill you in when I finish . . .
Happy Reading to you my friends! Oh, wait – what book or books are on your summer list?
